More than 69 ships were sunk during the Spring of 1944 during "Operation Hailstone" in retailiation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. As a result, these massive cargo ships, battleships and airplanes appear frozen in time and now sport amazing growth and brilliantly-colored hard & soft corals. The history of this area is fascinating as each one of the ships sunk in the lagoon carry with it a unique story. Still intact are machine guns, land mines, armored tanks, cannons, torpedoes, missiles, ship artifacts, dishes, saki bottles, gas masks, and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition.
Diving on these wrecks is so unique, it can't adequately be touched by video or photos yet, it inspires a feeling that consumes you as you dive and explore each of the ships. Truk Lagoon is a phenomenal destination and one of the top wreck locations in the world.
We will be spending 7 days on board the Odyssey, an all-inclusive liveaboard with 16-passenger capacity. Diver to Crew ratio is 2:1 so no diving and accommodation needs go unmet!

Liveaboard Diving In Style
The Odyssey is a 40m (132ft) dive liveaboard located in Weno, Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. On board the Odyssey, Truk's finest liveaboard vessel, you'll find amenities consistent with the world's top liveaboards. They offer 7 night cruises leaving on Sundays.
With its enormous size (40m/132ft), the Odyssey offers more amenities and space than most liveaboard dive vessel do. The comfortable lounge is where you'll find a variety of ways to entertain yourself. A well stocked bar, TV & VCR and also a DVD player are on board. There is a stereo system; also you find a good library, cards and games. Odyssey has a well-stocked boutique, also located in the lounge.
With all the thought that went into the diving, they haven't forgotten about sun worshippers! Just behind the dining area is a nice size sun deck with lounge chairs and deck chairs. There is also a covered section where you can still be outside, but not in direct sun. This is also where dive briefings are held.
The Odyssey's dining salon is fully carpeted and air conditioned with two walls of spacious windows for viewing the beauty of the islands in Truk Lagoon. Delicious buffet-style meals are the norm for the Odyssey. Breakfast includes a hot breakfast plus toast, cereals, fruit and juices. Lunch ranges anywhere from a beach barbecue to lunch on the vessel and snacks throughout the day. Hot, savoury, hearty dinners will complete your exciting day of diving, eating and relaxing. Don't forget the most important part of the meal though, the dessert!
The Odyssey boasts nine large, luxurious staterooms all fully carpeted with private air conditioning controls, windows or large portholes, and private toilet, shower and sink all in every stateroom. Seven of the staterooms are equipped to easily accommodate two single travellers in twin beds or a couple in a spacious king size bed (cabins 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9).
Also available are two staterooms for single travellers only (cabins 1 & 2) - they have all the features of the double staterooms and easily accommodate the single traveller in a single bed.
Odyssey offers regular 7-night cruises (Sunday-Sunday) from to Weno, the capital of Chuuk. Since each day aboard Odyssey offers new adventures, no day is really typical. Nothing is routine and schedules will vary depending on location.
The day aboard Odyssey begins after a 7.00am hot breakfast with your first dive briefing around 7.45am. Depending on the dive site you'll have up to two dives before lunch. During lunch the boat usually moves to a new site. After lunch you have the option to either do another dive, or relax on the either of the sundecks or in the privacy of your own stateroom. A late afternoon dive is also offered. Around 6.30pm a sumptuous dinner will be waiting for you. After dinner you may choose to do a night dive. At night guests usually gather in the entertainment lounge to enjoy a movie, or review what was captured that day in video.
Since most of the dive sites in Truk Lagoon are fairly close to each other, it is easy to move around. The best part about diving aboard Odyssey is that they don't require everyone to dive at the same time. So it is not unusual for you and your buddy to be the only divers on a wreck. For photographers, this offers more opportunities to shoot those popular scenes without having to wait for others to move out of the way.
Diving in Truk Lagoon is an adventure you will never forget. More then 60 ship wrecks are scattered across 77 square miles. Truk harboured a large Japanes base during WWII which was sunk in February 1944 by "Operation Hailstone". The wrecks are now protected and are covered with life. There are over 300 varieties of hard and soft corals. The majority of wrecks is within easy reach for divers in 15-40 meters (50 -120 feet). On the outer reef of Truk you'll find mountains of coral that stretch as far as the eye can see, and drops off into the abyss. Here it is not unusual to see pelagic sharks.
During your stay in Truk Lagoon you will find that the majority of your diving will easily be done directly off the Odyssey while they are moored over the dive site. Once you arrive and set up your gear in your own private seat and protected dive locker, you won't have to take your gear apart until you prepare to go home. Your tank (air or Nitrox) will be conveniently filled at your seat.
You'll find that the spacious dive platform has plenty of room for all divers. There are two long ladders to help you out of the water where you can step up to the convenient freshwater shower to rinse off with. Just 4 steps to the dive deck and you'll find the camera rinse tanks (one on either side of the boat). Past the camera rinse tanks are the gear rinse tanks.
There's plenty of space to hang your wetsuit on the bar just in front of the protected fan blowing warm air out of the engine room! For photographers, there is a large, sturdy, 3-tiered, carpeted photo table for all your working needs. A battery charging station is on board. Photo and video courses available.
Other features are:
Fixed safety/deco bar
Tanks filled at your seat
Warm deck towels
Nitrox, for certified Nitrox divers
DIN or yoke valves
Tanks (alum 80 and steel 108), weights, and belts
Technical Diving Facilities
Odyssey is very well equipped for technical divers:
- Double aluminum 80 tank systems
- Dual valve isolation manifolds, DIN or yoke
- Aluminum 30’s for deco gases
- Fixed deco bar
Odyssey is a great liveaboard choice for the recreational diver in Truk. It offers a comfortable way to explore Truk's ghost fleet. Odyssey is more expensive than other dive operators in Truk, but it is for sure worth it.
